When I was in high school, my girlfriends and I used to label almost everything “out of control.” This pertained to people, events or things that we deemed just a bit crazy or wild. Over time we started the acronym O.O.C (“Oh.Oh.Cee” ) which evolved into “Double Oh Cee”, then “Dub Oh” and eventually coalesced into silent choreography with a simple hand motion (making two letter O’s and a C with our hands). This simple, silent gesture was our way of connecting with each other without words in life’s crazy moments around some of the most colorful people we’d ever meet. Oh how I miss those “double oh” days. They were sweet and simple and so full of funny moments. If my younger self saw me today, I am sure she’d flash an OOC hand sign at my crazy-ass.
What does it mean to be “out of control” anyways? Mainstream culture applies a negative connotation to this phrase. Spiritual and religious circles might look at it more positively, as a time to surrender and let God lead. For me, it’s absolutely BOTH right now. Lately, life has felt extra “dub oh,” and I guess I am a little “OOC” in that sort of “insanely on-purpose” kind of way. Is any entrepreneur completely sane anyways? I guard some of our most vulnerable stories in an attempt to look like a completely confident and stable leader, but the truth is we’re struggling through this, big time. I am the less emotionally polar one in the family, the classic branded “libra” stereotype. But lately, I’ve felt that slipping, but these past couple weeks have challenged me to dig deep, to pray through the hard, and keep going even when things feel so out of my control.
We launched our Behere enrichment workshops 2 weeks ago, and great snakes that has that been a lot of work, for zero pay. Alas, such is the entrepreneur’s journey to work for the dream and not for the money. We’re investing every spare minute and dollar (we don’t have) into this business, so that we can succeed in supporting families looking for new ways to work and learn. The program is beautiful and we continue to tweak the rhythm and teaching approach daily to improve it for our members.
We’re still living in an airstream on our friend’s land while we try and figure out the last few financial details on moving our home and exploring 2 final resting spots. With no space to store anything, my car is jam-packed with all the outdoor enrichment workshop gear. I drive around with chalkboards, tables, and baskets upon baskets in my car 24/7, dreaming of the day we will have our beautiful space with storage solutions for all these beautiful Waldorf-ish supplies I have been curating.
Despite how unsettled our personal lives are, we’re pressing on imperfectly. Matthew and I are a great team and while we have major rocky moments and extreme emotional lows some days, we’re still here, together, working hard as a unit to juggle a homeless household, three kids, and a startup. It would be so much easier to just have a normal house, and normal jobs, but we fear going back to those comforts will slow us down. We stay the course for our future selves, and for all of you out there rooting for us because you want to see us succeed AND because you also want to benefit from the solution we provide. I know there are thousands more founder-families we’ve yet to meet who will be able to launch world-changing businesses if we can stay the course and pave this trail. But we need your help.
Will you spread the word?
Will you sign up for a workshop?
Will you join us at our launch dinner?
Will you pray for our home life and financial situation to stabilize?
When Behere is here in all her glory, there will be a space for entrepreneurs / remote workers and independent learning families to GO and BE, and flourish in their work and gifts. Families can be together, yet apart, on the same soil. Parents can work (or rest), while their children are being mentored and enriched for a few hours in a variety of educational and wonder-inspired workshops. Families can reconnect for a nutritious meal in the middle of the day, to exchange words, hugs and build up some connection over lunch before departing for an afternoon session of workshops. Just the thought of this vision makes me exhale.
We’re getting ready to host a Behere Launch dinner on 11/11 to share our vision and launch our crowdfunding investor campaign. I am beyond excited for this night, I was born to present this vision and I know it will be a majestic evening. All of the public speaking opportunities I have had in the past years have prepared me for this moment. I hope you’ll join us under the oak trees and stars to dream big
A point of clarity on the event, we’re are not 501c3. This is NOT a non profit fundraiser. We are a corporation and fully intend to scale and impact the economy nationwide or wherever there is a need for our services in the world. We will have a non-profit sister company in the near future with an agriculture and real-estate angle, but more to come on that!
Your contribution to the night is simple… buy a dinner ticket and enjoy an incredible meal by School of Lunch, some wine sponsored by my Wine For Good S&C biz, live music and the opportunity to hear about the Behere grand vision from yours truly! Regarding investment, there will be no financial expectations of our guests other than mingling, eating, and communing over this exciting vision to launch Behere. We are certain the night will reveal opportunities and connections on investment, new customers/members and potentially even land development options!
Just come as you are and enjoy a night under the oak trees. We trust the rest will unfold as divinely intended.
Thank you for sharing in this journey with us. It’s messy, it’s hard, but it’s all WORTH DOING.
In love,
-Brooke
